Introduction
Over the past six years — from my first clumsy order in 2018 to managing a full data center refresh in 2024 — I've made just about every mistake you can make with power and connectivity gear. Wrong PDU voltage. Mis-spec'd enclosure depth. Forgetting to account for transfer switch switching time. The list goes on.
This article answers the eight questions I wish someone had walked me through before I started. If you're configuring a new rack or replacing a legacy Tripp Lite setup, these are the things I'd check first.

The short version: an ATS (automatic transfer switch) gives you two input power sources — say, primary utility power and a backup generator or UPS — and automatically switches to the backup if the primary fails. I initially thought of ATS units as overkill for small racks. Then I had a PDU fail during a routine breaker swap in 2022. - Depth and rail position. The SmartRack SR series comes in depths from 24" to 47". Measure your deepest device (including cable managers and rear-mounted PDUs). - Weight load. Most SmartRacks handle up to 3,000 lbs, but floor loading and pallet jack access matter. I learned that when our facility's raised floor tiles couldn't support a fully loaded 48U unit.

3. Can a Tripp Lite UPS deliver USB-C power delivery while recording data?
Some Tripp Lite UPS models with USB communication ports (like the Smart1500LCDT) can output USB power to charge a phone or tablet while simultaneously sending status data to a server. But — and this is a trap I fell into — the USB-A port on many older units is for monitoring only. It won't charge squat.
As of 2025, models with USB-C PD are still fairly rare. If you specifically need USB-PD while recording (e.g., for a Raspberry Pi logging power events), check the manual's feature table. Look for "USB charging port" or "always-on USB." A safer bet: add a dedicated USB power strip inside the rack. Even I didn't know this until I tried to power a security camera off a SurgeArrest's USB port — dead camera, wasted afternoon.
4. Who is Reid? (A real Tripp Lite question I get from new engineers)
I've had three different system admins ask me: "Who is Reid, and why is his name on my Tripp Lite cable tester?" 6. Can I use a Tripp Lite PDU with a non-Tripp Lite UPS?
Yes, absolutely. PDUs are standard — they take C13/C19 inlets and distribute power. I've successfully used a Tripp Lite basic PDU with an APC UPS and a Vertiv PDU with a Tripp Lite UPS. The gotcha is voltage and plug type. Tripp Lite PDUs often come with 5-15P, L5-30P, or L6-20P plugs. If your non-Tripp Lite UPS has different output receptacles, you'll need an adapter — or a plumber (not really, but an electrician).
My mistake: I assumed all L5-30 plugs are the same. They are, but locking orientation varies by brand. A $15 adapter solved it, but it delayed my deployment by two days.
7. The "one question you didn't think to ask": What's the switching time on the ATS?
Most people assume an ATS switches instantly. It doesn't — there's a transfer time, typically 10-20 milliseconds on Tripp Lite's rack-mount ATS units. Single-cord devices see a brief power gap. If your device (like a network switch) has a power supply that can't tolerate a 15ms gap, you'll see a reboot.
I learned this the hard way: installed a PDUMH20AT for a remote site's core switch. First test — the switch rebooted. The fix: use dual-cord devices where each power supply connects to a different ATS output, and let each ATS handle one leg. Problem solved. Now I always check the datasheet for transfer time before ordering.
8. Is Tripp Lite better than APC or Eaton? (I get asked this at every conference)
I can't give you an absolute answer — it depends on your rack density, your budget, and your preference for software management (Tripp Lite's PowerAlert vs. Eaton's Intelligent Power Manager, for example). What I can tell you: Tripp Lite has a broader portfolio in the mid-range, especially for 1000–3000 VA UPSs and basic PDUs. APC dominates the enterprise space, Eaton owns high-density three-phase. Tripp Lite's share is the SMB and edge market.
To be fair: I've seen both APC and Tripp Lite units fail. Reliability is never 100%. What matters is warranty support, availability of replacement batteries, and whether the vendor stocks the accessories you need. Tripp Lite's 3-year warranty and Eaton-back global support put them in a strong position for 90% of deployments.
My advice: pick based on your specific power needs, not brand loyalty. And if you're replacing a legacy unit, check the input plug — it's the single most common compatibility issue I've seen.
