If you're an IT manager, a system integrator, or basically anyone ordering Tripp Lite power cords and rack gear for the first time (or the tenth time but still second-guessing yourself), this is for you. This checklist came out of a $450 blunder: I ordered 50 Tripp Lite 18u wall mount racks with the wrong power cord configuration. They looked right on paper. The PDU slots matched. Step 1: Confirm Power Cord Type — Don't Assume "Standard"
This is where I screwed up. I assumed all Tripp Lite power cords with a C13 connector are the same. Nah. You've got NEMA 5-15P, NEMA 5-20P, C14, C19, and a dozen others. The tripp lite power cord you need depends on your PDU input and your outlet type.
Here's what I check now:
- Pigtail or detachable? Some UPS units have fixed cords; others use detachable C13/C14. Know which you've got.
- Amperage rating. A NEMA 5-15P cord is rated 15A. A 5-20P has a sideways blade and handles 20A. If your PDU draws 18A, you can't use 15A cords. (Actually, you shouldn't.)
- Length. The Tripp Lite catalog lists lengths in feet. I order 6 ft for most racks, but for deeper cabinets I go 10 ft. Measure the path from PDU to device.
- Color? Tripp Lite offers black, gray, and sometimes yellow. Black matches racks. Gray is easier to spot. Pick one and stick with it — mixing colors looks messy.
Oh, and check the connector orientation. Some C13s have a right-angle bend. If your devices are stacked tight, straight connectors might not fit. Learned that after wrestling a cable into a server for ten minutes. (Should mention: I now keep a sample of each cord type in my desk to physically test before ordering bulk.)
Step 2: Measure Rack Depth — Twice
I once ordered 18 units of the Tripp Lite 18u wall mount rack — the SRW18US series. I measured the wall space perfectly. What I forgot: the rack's total depth includes the front door and rear panel. The spec sheet says "15.5 inches" but that's the usable internal depth. The actual depth with door closed? 19.2 inches.
Doesn't sound like much, but when you have 18 racks and the server slides stick out 0.7 inches past the front door clearance, you can't close the door. That meant ordering shallower shelves. Embarrassing.
My checklist now reads:
- Spec sheet depth vs. installed depth — add door clearance and cable management arm space.
- Wall stud spacing — the mounting brackets need to hit studs. Tripp Lite's rack brackets are usually 16" or 24" on center. Don't assume your wall matches.
- Weight capacity — an 18u rack loaded with switches and UPS can exceed 100 lbs. Make sure the wall anchors are rated properly (toggle bolts vs. lag bolts — depends on your wall type).
I don't have hard data on how many people get this wrong, but based on the 20+ forums I've read, maybe 1 in 10 underestimates depth. Your mileage may vary, of course.
Step 3: Check PDU Outlet Spacing — Seriously, Plug Sizes Matter
Tripp Lite PDUs come in various outlet densities. A basic 1U PDU has 8 outlets. A high-density one packs 24 C13s. The problem? The outlets are closer together. Some power cord plugs are wider than others — especially the ones with built-in surge protection or right-angle heads.
I assumed all C13 plugs are the same width. Not true. A standard Tripp Lite P006-006 (6 ft cord) has a narrow head — fine for dense PDUs. But some third-party cables have chunky overmolds that block adjacent outlets. You end up losing 2-3 ports per row. I wish I had tracked the wasted capacity; anecdotally, it cost us about 10% usable ports on one deployment.
Checklist item: Measure plug head width (or better, order a single unit first and test-fit it on your PDU).
Step 4: Verify Voltage and Phase — Don't Fry $50,000 Worth of Gear
This sounds obvious, but I've seen people order 120V equipment for a 208V line. Tripp Lite makes both 120V and 208V PDUs, and the rack mount UPS units come in multiple voltages. If you're buying a Tripp Lite UPS for a server rack, check the input voltage label on the unit itself, not just the website.
I can only speak to single-phase setups. If you're dealing with three-phase, the calculus is different — I'd bring in an electrician. Seriously.
Step 5: Don't Forget Cable Management — It's Not Optional
You've ordered the racks, the power cords, the PDUs. Now you open the boxes and realize the rack has no built-in cable management. The Tripp Lite 18u wall mount rack (SRW18US) does include a top cable entry plate, but if you need horizontal D-rings or a vertical cable manager, that's separate.
On my first big order, I skipped the cable management accessories to save $200. Dumb. The client's rack looked like a spaghetti explosion. We had to order D-rings and install them post-deployment — cost more in labor than the savings.
My rule: always include at least two horizontal cable managers per rack and one vertical if the rack is over 12u. And verify the mounting hole pattern (square vs. round) matches your rack. Tripp Lite racks usually have square holes compatible with cage nuts. But if you bought a used rack, check.
Step 6: Double-Check Packing List — Accessories Often Missing
This is the boring but vital step. Tripp Lite typically includes mounting hardware (screws, cage nuts, etc.) with racks. But I've received shipments where the hardware kit was missing — maybe 1 in 30 orders. If you don't check immediately, you lose time sourcing replacements.
I also learned never to assume "18u rack" includes a shelf. Some models do, some don't. The SRW18US comes with adjustable mounting rails but no shelf. If you need a shelf for a UPS or a non-rackmount device, add it.
Notes and Common Mistakes
- Mixing market regions. Tripp Lite makes USA (NEMA) and international (IEC) versions. A C13 cord works worldwide, but the plug end differs. Order tripp lite power cord with the correct country plug.
- Assuming "18u wall mount" means shallow. Not always. Some wall-mount racks are deep enough for full servers, others only for switches. Read the product series carefully (SRW vs. SRWF).
- Ignoring the UPS output receptacles. Some Tripp Lite UPS models have a mix of battery-backed and surge-only outlets. Don't plug critical gear into the non-backed outlets.
- Forgetting to label cables. If you don't label both ends of every power cord, you'll hate yourself during moves or adds.
Bottom line: this checklist won't make you perfect, but it'll save you from the mistakes I made. If you're dealing with a complex setup — like 42U racks with three-phase power — don't go it alone. That's where the pros come in. A good vendor (like the ones who make Tripp Lite) will tell you when you need an electrician or a specialist. I'd rather work with someone who knows their limits than someone who promises the moon and delivers a crater.
