So I had to buy a converter anyway—after I'd already mounted everything.
What to look for:
- Compatibility: Does the media converter support the fiber type you need (multimode or single-mode)?
- Scalability: Buy one with a slot for a pluggable SFP transceiver so you can change the fiber type later without replacing the whole unit.
- Form factor: Some media converters are standalone modules; others are designed to fit into a chassis that mounts in the rack. The chassis approach is cleaner for more than one or two converters.
Step 3: Choose the Right Enclosure (For Real)
An enclosure is just a box, right? That's what I thought. Then I bought a 24U open frame rack for a closet that had no rear ventilation. The gear ran hot. I had to install a side panel add-on six months later, which cost almost as much as a proper enclosed rack from the start.
Decision guide:
- Open frame vs. enclosed: Open frames are cheaper and give easier cable access, but they don't control airflow or noise. For a small room that doubles as an office, an enclosed rack with a fan kit is worth the extra cost.
- Depth: Shallow enclosures (24" or less) are fine for patch panels and small switches, but if you plan to mount a full-size UPS or a server with sliding rails, you need at least 36".

Step 4: Plan Your Connectivity and Connectors
Everybody remembers the cables. Few people remember the connectors. I learned this the hard way when I ordered a 50-pack of pre-terminated Cat6 cables—but they had RJ45 boots that were too wide to fit through my cable management rings. - Keystone jacks: If you're using keystone patch panels, buy connectors that are compatible with the panel's mounting style (snap-in vs. screw-in).
Step 5: Leave Room for the Things You Forgot
This is the step most people skip. After you've allocated space for your switch, patch panels, UPS, and server, leave at least 2U of empty space. I once planned the layout perfectly on paper, only to realize the UPS's battery cabinet was slightly taller than I'd measured. It wouldn't fit in the designated slot. I had to rearrange the whole rack—while the gear was powered on. Not fun.
